About

James Oosh Caverly.jpg

In third grade I started at a new school. It was a weird school. We called teachers by their first names, I was one of eight kids my age, there were no tests or grades, and when you got in trouble, you might meet with the teachers where only the one wearing the clown nose could speak. It was passed around the circle from nose to nose.

On my first day, first period was simply called writing. I was given paper, a pencil, and a vague writing prompt. "You mean I can write whatever I want?" I beamed. "Yup," said the teacher. I was excited. There was no hesitation. I ran the graphite over the paper immediately. My brain danced. I experienced a scientific phenomenon known as "flow," in which an hour only lasts like 10 minutes.

The feeling I received that day never left me, and so I've written ever since. Starting my career as a writer in journalism (Wall Street Journal, Popular Mechanic Magazine) and then a master's degree into PR (Johnson & Johnson) I saw how it often pays more in ego than dollars, and so because ego don't pay no bills and the great recession was flippin' tough for the marketing world (journalism already was getting its butt kicked), I started Booskerdoo Coffee & Baking Co., which now has seven locations and strong local brand equity.

And now I'm side hustling to become a fiction author, starting with my first book The August Island Society of Young Detectives, a middle-grade mystery novel. Finally writing the first book of many I always knew I had in me, I've used what I love to see in great story telling, including but not limited to: satisfying setting, flawed characters, wants & needs met, and curiosity molded into something new... at least that's how I hope all the novel's messages are received.

Please let me know if you want to read it. I'd love to get your notes on it.
